Thecapital city of Yerevan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities inthe world, and is surrounded by natural beauty, including an expansive mountainrange and the Hrazdan River.Yerevan is a major cultural center of Armenia, and historical site dating backover five millennia. Nicknamed the "pink city" (and not because of its buddingwine culture), Yerevan's vibrant culture peeks from behind every corner. Manymodern buildings along its tree-lined streets have been constructed intraditional Armenian styles and of variously coloured local stone (thus the"pink"), while many theaters, museums, and other attractions decorate the city. The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BC, with the founding ofthe fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC. Erebuni was designed as a greatadministrative and religious centre, a "fully royal capital." Since this time,Erebuni and the rest of the city have been subsumed under the control of theRomans, Parthians, Arabs, Mongols, Turks, Persians, Georgians, and Russians. In1920, Yerevan became the capital of the independent Armenian republic. With the growth of the Armenian economy, Yerevan has undergone majortransformation. Much construction has been done throughout the city since theearly 2000s, and retail outlets such as restaurants, shops, and street cafés,which were rare during Soviet times, have multiplied.Take a look around the city by checking out the video below.
