Photo courtesy: Official Smurf Website.Created in 1958 by the Belgian artistPeyo, The Smurfs is a comic franchise that centers on small blue creatures wholive in mushroom-shaped houses in a forest village. While most Smurfs wear whitehats, Papa Smurf wears a red hat.As according to the traditional series, Papa Smurf acts as the leader andfatherly figure for the Smurf community. He is the source of wisdom, knowledgeand advice in the community, offering stern reprimands where necessary. He wouldprotect "his little Smurfs" from danger unequivocally. And danger is abound. Enter: antagonist Gargamel. One of this villain's mostevil plots is to break the tight-knit community the only way he can: from theinside. Gargamel creates a female Smurf, Smurfette, to drive the all-malecommunity apart. In the end (spoiler!), Papa Smurf saves the day yet again bytransforming Smurfette into a real Smurf and integrating her into the community. The rest of the Smurfs find purpose in their highly specialized tasks in thecommunity. To name a few, we see Brainy Smurf, Clumsy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf,Hefty Smurf, Greedy Smurf, and so on and so forth. Each fills a predictable rolein the plot and group dynamic.
