One of the best-known landmarks ofGermany, it was built on the site of a former city gate, which marked the startof the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel.The Brandenburg Gate has served as a historic site of political power andpropaganda. In 1933, Hitler and other high-ranking members of the Nazi partycelebrated victory over the chancellorship by processing under the famous gates.It was the first of many large-scale propaganda events by the Nazis. After thewar, working on restoring its damages was one of the last unified efforts byEast and West Berlin authorities. Soon after, the wall was erected and theBrandenburg Gate belonged to East Berlin. This site became famous forpresidential speeches, protest, and music performances by advocates for aunified Berlin. Resting atop this famous gate is an equally notable statue: a goddess of victorycommonly referred to as the "Quadriga". This statue has been taken down on anumber of pivotal moments in German history. The first dismantling occurredduring Napoleon's reign of power, where the new emperor ordered the statue to betaken down and shipped away as a mark of his influence. However, with the quickcrumbling of his empire, Napoleon lost sight of the statue and it remained instorage until 1814. It wasn't until Paris fell to Prussian powers that theQuadriga was discovered and returned to rest atop Berlin's famous gate. Thesecond dismantling occurred during the Communist era. In the end, the Quadrigawasn't permanently installed until 1990.
