Several decadeslater, the city hosted Asia's first World Cup in 2002. The city has sinceachieved other recognition through not only their namesake beer, but alsothrough their magical Snow Festival hosted every February. The festival is knownfor beautifully intricate ice sculptures and ice activities that stretch downthe middle of the city. The festival began back in 1950, with the creation ofsix snow sculptures by middle and high school students. Miraculously, thepublicity from the Olympics and general appreciation for the event allowed it togrow from a well-loved local event to a staple of the city's activities to aninternational sensation.
