A celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson is currently ranked asthe 26th most translated author in the world. Perhaps less known about this prolific author was his lifelong struggle withillness. Young Stevenson's weak lungs destined him to a bedridden childhood andfrequently threatened his life as a young adult. The sickroom served as theinspiration for his earliest works, many of which reflected his religiousupbringing. However, Stevenson was not always confined to his bed or hisfather's religious imposition. Once the young author reached college, heabandoned his religious beliefs and began to embrace a more avid and waywardlifestyle. His love for travel and his search for a more suitable environment tocontrol his illness took him all over Europe and eventually to America, where hefound his future wife. The inspiration for Stevenson's works grew out of these travels and his vividimagination. Stevenson describes one rainy afternoon in his Essays in the Art ofWriting:> "I made the map of an island; it was elaborately and (I thought) beautifullycoloured; the shape of it took my fancy beyond expression; it contained harboursthat pleased me like sonnets; and with the unconsciousness of the predestined, Iticketed my performance ‘Treasure Island.’”Treasure Island was adapted by Disney into a live action adventure film in 1950.The film was met with success, and many further adaptations followed.
