In the mid-1stcentury, a walled Roman encampment was built by Roman legionnaires and developedinto the settlement of Emona, though the area had been settled earlier by theVeneti, the Illyrians, and the Celts, beginning in about 1000 BCE. In astrategic location for trade and commerce, the city was destroyed by Attila theHun in the mid-5th century. It wasn't until the Slovene Slavic tribes, migratingwestward, rebuilt it in the 12th century. It was then that the city's name wasrecorded first as Laibach (1144) and then as Luvigana (1146).
