Photo credit: public domain. The myth of Jason and the Argonauts is one of theoldest quest narratives. The quest begins when Jason's half-uncle asks him toretrieve the Golden Fleece — a nearly impossible task — in order to reclaim hisrightful throne. When presented with a task so significant, it's only natural to want the help ofa couple of extra heroes along the way. As the story goes, Jason amassed a teamof powerful Greek heroes, soothsayers, and demigods to help him claim the GoldenFleece and win back the kingdom. This team named themselves the Argonauts, aftertheir sturdy ship. Yet the road to the fleece was hardly smooth. By the time Jason and theArgonauts reached the island of Colchis, the home of the fleece, they had foughtoff plenty of monsters and navigated through many dangerous straits. Jasonrealized, as they reached their final destination, that he would have to sparehis bedraggled team and retrieve the fleece with just a few men. King Aeëtes was enraged by Jason's claim to the fleece. If Jason wanted histreasure, he would have to prove his worth by facing three perilous tasks. Thetrials would begin the following day, and Jason was dismissed to prepare. However, unbeknownst to Jason, another member of the royal family was plottingsomething. Thanks to the encouragement from Jason's guardians on Mt. Olympus,Medea, Princess of Colchis, had fallen in love with Jason. As such, she would dowhatever it took to protect Jason from her father. With Medea's help, Jason easily conquered King Aeëtes' three tasks. However, when Medea and Jason looked to make their escape, Jason delivered a fatal blowto one of the king's advisors— effectively turning the gods against them.Hostile winds blew the ship off course, trapping the crew on the island ofCirce.
