In 1951,she was hired in her first job as an Inquiring Photographer for the WashingtonTimes-Herald. Roving around the city, she took pictures of people sheencountered, asked them questions on the issues of the day, and wove theiranswers into her newspaper column. Among those she interviewed for her columnwas Richard M. Nixon. She also covered the first inauguration of Dwight D.Eisenhower and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.Jackie O was also known as fashion icon. In her first year as First Lady of theUnited States, she reportedly spent $45,000 over the $100,000 salary herhusband, John F. Kennedy, earned as president. Her style contributed torevolutionary advances in the fashion industry, popularizing styles that havesince been canonized as her own. The pillbox hat, shown below, is just oneexample.
