> Of the four hemispheres on Earth, which one has the most people? And the answer: Northern. The Northern Hemisphere holds the majority of the land mass on Earth, and wherethere is land, there are people. Approximately 87% of the world's populationlives north of the Equator, while 82% live in the Eastern Hemisphere.Photo credit: public domain. At 0 degrees latitude, the Equator marks the linewhich divides north from south, and consequentially divides the Northern andSouthern Hemispheres. The Northern Hemisphere contains North America, thenorthern part of South America, Europe, the northern two-thirds of Africa, andmost of Asia. The Southern Hemisphere contains most of South America, one-thirdof Africa, Australia, Antarctica, and many Asian islands.Beyond simply dividing land, though, different hemispheres have differentweather and seasonal timelines. Because of the Earth's tilt, the summer monthsare from December to March in the Southern Hemisphere, which are typicallywinter months in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, the Earth can be divided along lines of longitude or median, whichcreates Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The idea of Eastern and WesternHemispheres has become politically and historically significant since Europeannations began colonizing North America and South America. In this context, theEastern Hemisphere is sometimes called the "Old World," and the WesternHemisphere is called the "New World."
