Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents wereSlovakian immigrants, and the family enforced their devout Byzantine Catholicbeliefs by attending mass every week. When Warhol was eight years old hecontracted a nervous disease that left him bedridden for weeks. It was therethat his mother introduced to him the pleasure of drawing and art. From thatpoint on Warhol pursued his love for art, and eventually went on to study it atCarnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). In his career Warhol was first known and celebrated for his whimsical style and"blotted line" technique. This technique combined basic printmaking skills withdrawing, and allowed him to make several slightly varied illustrations along asimilar theme. He soon turned to pop art, which was a practice largely inspiredby commercial artifacts of daily life. He drew from the blotted line practice ofreplication with slight variation, and it was a hit. Warhol's career took offand his practice soon grew to encompass more experimental forms of art as wellas sculpture, performance art and filmmaking. In the end, Warhol was a massiveinfluence on the development of the contemporary art scene.
